Applewood Centers was established in 1997 through the merger of Children's Services (started in 1945) and The Guidance Centers (founded in 1924), with roots tracing back to 1832 when Sarah Van Tyne founded Cleveland's first free school and charity. This private, nonprofit organization has evolved into a leader in improving the lives of children by providing high-quality behavioral healthcare and out-of-home services. In 2004, Applewood merged with Children's Aid Society, established in 1865 as Cleveland's first charity, further expanding its capacity to serve vulnerable youth in the Greater Cleveland area. As an affiliate of Wingspan Care Group since 2008, Applewood continues to innovate in behavioral healthcare while maintaining its commitment to the community.
Today, Applewood Centers delivers a comprehensive continuum of care to approximately 6,000 children and their families across Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. Their services range from outpatient counseling and school-based mental health programs to residential treatment for youth with severe emotional and behavioral challenges. The organization also operates specialized educational programs, including The Gerson School and The Reserve School, providing therapeutic learning environments for students with unique needs. Guided by core values of caring, child-centered service, collaboration, excellence, innovation, and integrity, Applewood's dedicated team of professionals provides individualized support that addresses behavioral, emotional, and learning challenges while promoting dignity, diversity, and inclusion for every client and family member they serve.
